Some of Sparrows Point’s 635 coke ovens rake the sky with soot. As the mill’s slide deepened, the ovens and chemical byproduct facilities were partially abandoned, then permanently shut in 1992. The area is now bulldozed, and much of the coke for Sparrows Point’s sole remaining blast furnace is imported from China.
