Slag dumping, about 1960

Slag, the waste of steelmaking, was emptied into Baltimore Harbor to expand the plant’s perimeter. When the hot slag hit the water, flares of orange light shot into the sky, visible for miles around. The slag cooled into black crusty dirt. This image, typical of slag operations at Sparrows Point, was taken by a company photographer near Hellertown, Pa.
