Ben Womer had the classic face of an open hearth worker. Small hemorrhages, called “sunburns,” developed under his skin from exposure to the intense heat. The gash on his nose came from a crane hook. At its prime, Sparrows Point employed more than 2,000 men in the open hearth department.
