Tin-plate washer, 1936

Baltimore Sun file photo
A worker operates the levers of a washer unit on the production line of the tin-plate mill. The razor-sharp steel ran through the machinery at about 500 feet per minute. Most of Sparrows Point’s tin plate (actually steel with a microscopic coating of tin) was sold to make cans for Campbell’s Soups, Dole’s Hawaiian Pineapple Company, and such beer makers as Anheuser-Busch and Pabst.
