The Bessemer converter ushered in the age of mass-produced steel. Cold air shot through the molten iron at the bottom of these vessels and spouted out impurities in the iron in a flaming geyser to form steel. This 20-ton converter, the biggest in the world, was photographed at Sparrows Point before it was installed at the plant in 1891.
