The original Irregulars, called the Baker Street Irregulars,
were featured in Sherlock Holmes crime stories. They were a group of
street urchins who helped Holmes in his various investigations with tips
and information. Holmes paid the Irregulars a shilling a day (plus expenses),
with a guinea prize (worth one pound and one shilling) for a vital clue.
I
can’t afford to pay you in coinage, but tips and vital clues
about the industries and persons described on these pages are welcome.
